HERI WA HERI’S JOURNEY OF FAITH, EDUCATION, AND PURPOSE

From a childhood in Kigoma to a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Heriwa Heri’s remarkable journey is a testimony of perseverance, faith, and the courage to pursue a dream.

There are journeys that begin with a clear destination, and there are journeys in which the destination becomes visible only one step at a time.

For Heriwa Heri, the journey began in Kibirizi, Kigoma, Tanzania, where he was born and raised as the eighth child in the Kilimani Heri family. As a young boy growing up surrounded by family and community, he could hardly have imagined that his life would one day take him across the Atlantic to the United States, where he would build an impressive academic, professional, and spiritual journey.

Today, Heriwa looks back at his story as a testimony that one's beginning does not have to determine one's ending.

A NEW BEGINNING AT 15

At just 15 years old, Heriwa moved from Tanzania to the United States.

His arrival in America marked the beginning of an entirely new chapter. Unlike many young people his age, Heriwa had not attended school while living in Tanzania. His formal education began only after he arrived in Orlando, Florida.

Starting school at 15 in a completely unfamiliar country was not easy.

He had to navigate a new educational system while simultaneously adjusting to a different language, culture, environment, and way of life. Everything around him seemed different, and the experience presented challenges that could easily have discouraged him.

One of his earliest experiences was cultural shock.

Even food, something that might seem simple, became part of the adjustment. Growing up in Kibirizi, Heriwa was accustomed to fresh, locally available foods and especially remembers Mikebuka fish from Lake Tanganyika, a familiar part of life in his community.

In America, he encountered a food culture in which processed foods were much more common.

It was just one of many differences he had to learn to understand.

But instead of allowing these challenges to defeat him, Heriwa chose to see them as opportunities.

He became determined to learn—not only academically, but also about the society around him. He wanted to understand how America worked, how organizations were structured, and how he could develop the knowledge and skills necessary to one day establish and operate his own business.

BUILDING AN EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

Heriwa's educational journey continued after he moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He enrolled at Kirkwood Community College, where he pursued an Associate Degree in Business Administration with a focus in Management.

In 2020, he successfully completed the program.

For someone whose formal education had started only after arriving in America, earning an associate degree was a significant achievement. But Heriwa was not ready to stop.

He continued his education at Mount Mercy University in Iowa, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 2022.

Each academic achievement represented another step forward not only in his education but also in his personal transformation.

The young boy who had arrived in America without a formal educational background was becoming a college graduate.

FROM BUSINESS TO HEALTHCARE

After completing his bachelor's degree, Heriwa moved to Dallas, Texas.

By this stage, his ambitions had continued to grow. He remained interested in business and entrepreneurship, but his experiences also began directing his attention toward another field: healthcare.

He became increasingly interested in healthcare organizations, leadership, operations, administration, and the systems that serve communities.

That interest led him to pursue a master's degree in Healthcare Administration at Western Governors University.

In 2026, Heriwa reached another major milestone: he graduated with his master's degree.

For him, however, the degree represents much more than an academic credential.

It represents a journey.

His formal education began in America because he had not attended school in Tanzania. From beginning school at 15 in Orlando, he went on to earn an associate degree, a bachelor's degree, and finally a master's degree.

His academic journey is a powerful example of what persistence can accomplish.

THE POWER OF PERSEVERANCE

Heriwa's success did not come without obstacles.

Coming from a low-income background and building his educational path from the ground up required sacrifice, patience, discipline, and determination.

There were difficult seasons. There were moments when the future was uncertain. But Heriwa continued moving forward.

He learned an important lesson along the way: success is rarely achieved overnight.

Sometimes success means simply refusing to quit.

His story demonstrates the importance of consistency continuing to take the next step even when the final destination is not yet visible.

DISCOVERING A DEEPER FAITH

Education was not the only area in which Heriwa experienced transformation.

Faith also became an important part of his journey.

Heriwa was born and raised in a Christian family. However, as a young person, he says he did not fully understand who Jesus Christ was or what it meant to have a personal relationship with Him.

That understanding began to develop more deeply after he moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He became actively involved in church and eventually served as a praise and worship leader.

Through worship, studying the Word of God, serving others, and encouraging young people, his relationship with Christ became increasingly personal.

His faith was no longer simply something inherited from his family. It became something he personally embraced.

A HEART FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

As his relationship with God grew, Heriwa developed a passion for reaching young people.

He wanted to encourage the younger generation to come to Jesus Christ, discover their purpose, and become positive examples within their communities.

He began teaching the Word of God publicly and through Facebook Live every Saturday.

His ministry eventually expanded into preaching.

Heriwa was called to serve as a pastor and preached at his Philadelphia church in Iowa. For him, standing before people and sharing the Word of God is not simply a responsibility it is something that brings him peace and fulfillment.

Preaching has become close to his heart, and he believes ministry is part of God's purpose for his life.

MUSIC AS A MINISTRY

Music has also played a significant role in Heriwa's spiritual journey.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when fear and uncertainty had spread throughout communities around the world, Heriwa released his first song, “Nakataa Corona in Jesus Name.”

The song was inspired by what he was witnessing around him.

People were afraid. Families and communities were affected by the pandemic, and churches were navigating unprecedented circumstances.

Heriwa wanted to use music to communicate a message of faith and encouragement.

Rather than allowing fear to dominate, he encouraged people to place their trust in God.

The song became another expression of his belief that the gifts God gives us can be used to encourage and strengthen others.

WHERE EDUCATION MEETS PURPOSE

For Heriwa, education, business, healthcare, music, and ministry are not separate pieces of his life.

They are connected by a larger sense of purpose.

His education has provided knowledge and professional opportunities. His business interests have given him a desire to create and build. His interest in healthcare has opened a path toward serving communities through leadership and administration.

And his faith has given him direction.

He believes that success should not be measured only by what a person achieves for themselves, but also by how they use their knowledge, talents, and opportunities to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

A MESSAGE TO THE NEXT GENERATION

Looking back at his journey, Heriwa has a message for young Africans, immigrants, refugees, and anyone who feels limited by their circumstances.

His message is simple: Do not allow your beginning to define your future.

He believes that a person's background, financial circumstances, or difficult childhood should never become a reason to abandon their dreams.

His own life is evidence of that belief.

He began in Kibirizi, Kigoma, Tanzania.

He moved to America at 15.

He started formal education in Orlando, Florida.

He continued his education in Iowa.

He earned an associate degree in 2020, a bachelor's degree in 2022, and a master's degree in Healthcare Administration in 2026.

Along the way, he discovered entrepreneurship, developed a passion for healthcare, deepened his relationship with Jesus Christ, became involved in ministry, preached the Gospel, and used music as another avenue of encouragement.

His advice to those following behind him is rooted in faith and determination:

“Do not limit yourself because of where you come from. Believe that you can do it, because we can do everything through God who strengthens us. If I did it, you can do it too.”

LOOKING AHEAD

Today, Heriwa's story is far from finished.

His vision extends beyond academic accomplishments. He wants to continue growing professionally in healthcare administration, develop meaningful business opportunities, serve others, and continue pursuing his calling in ministry, music, and preaching.

His journey from Kibirizi to Dallas has taught him that life can change in ways a person could never have predicted.

The 15-year-old boy who arrived in America without having attended school in Tanzania could not have known that years later he would stand as a master's degree graduate.

But one step became another.

One challenge became a lesson.

One opportunity opened the door to another.

And through it all, faith remained an important part of the journey.

A JOURNEY THAT INSPIRES

Heriwa Heri's story is ultimately a story of transformation.

It is the story of a young man who started with very little formal education, crossed continents, faced cultural and financial challenges, embraced education, discovered a passion for healthcare, developed a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ, served through ministry and music, and ultimately earned a master's degree.

His story reminds us that where you start is not necessarily where you will finish.

Kibirizi was his beginning.

America became a new chapter.

Education became a pathway.

Faith became his foundation.

Service became part of his purpose.

And the journey continues.

For the young African dreaming of a better future, the immigrant beginning again in a new country, the student wondering whether it is too late to start, or the person facing circumstances that seem impossible, Heriwa's life carries a powerful message:

Keep going. Keep learning. Keep believing. Keep trusting God.

Because sometimes the greatest stories are written by people who simply refused to stop walking toward their purpose.
